Olympic Flame approaches

See my blog coverage of the flame in Toronto including celebrations in Nathan Phillips Square and here for my coverage of the relay convoy with Art Lewis from General Motors of Canada.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay is approaching Toronto, 300 metres at a time. It is in Quebec right now and will move into Ontario on Saturday December 12, 2009 and into Toronto on Thursday December 17, 2009.

The flame came from Greece, original home of the Olympics, ignited from a solar collector by some priestesses (actors) and brought to Canada. The torch started out on the west coast and proceeded up north to the Artic and over to the east coast - now it's on it's journey back to the the west coast and the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

The route of the flame was designed to maximize the number of relay members and communities (over 1000) that experienced the torch relay. As noted in a previous post Bombardier made over 12,000 torches and each relay member can purchase their torch - for $371. The members of the relay only carry the torch for 300 metres so everyone will look fresh for the crowds.

General Motors is the official vehicle supplier for the Olympic Games and they have an astonishing number of vehicles supporting the relay. The fleet managers are Art and Serge and they have a website www.chevrolet2010roadtrip.ca and twitter feed http://www.twitter.com/GM_ArtandSerge for their journey. I intend to visit Art and Serge and see some of their vehicles up close. I imagine a big rig full of torches - just like the racks in the film Matrix.
