Search and Rescue Exercise - Humber Bay

The cold waters of Toronto's Humber Bay in Lake Ontario were full of Emergency personnel as they practiced a rescue involving a crashed plane. Toronto Police Services Marine Unit worked with Emergency Medical Services, Toronto Island Ferries, a Peel Marine Unit and a large number of volunteers who played the wounded to respond to a reported airplane crash.

The marine unit found the crash site - a smoking Toronto Ferry standing in for the aircraft, and started the rescue process at 9:20 am. One of the first units to respond was the fireboat the William Lyon Mackenzie putting out the fake fire.

A mock environmental spill hampered the initial rescue, however when the site was made safe the police boats began to bring the casualties to shore for treatment.

This flag tells you how serious the accident could be in real life.

By 11:00 am the exercise was over and Toronto will be better prepared for the next real emergency.
