With an estimated 5,000 people competing in the Telus Toronto Dragon Boat Festival at Centre Island this Saturday and Sunday (June 19 and 20, 2010) the matches between the Dragon Boats will be epic.
Beginning over 2 decades ago with 27 teams they expect about 200 teams this year. This 22nd annual event is organized by the Dragon Boat Festival and the Toronto Chinese Business Association and raises funds for charities including the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Breast Cancer Foundation.
The races run from 8am to 6pm on Saturday and from 8am to 4:20pm on Sunday. To get to Centre Island you will need to take the Island Ferry (or water taxi) which will open at 6am and depart at 6:30, 7 and 7:15am then the departures return to the regularly scheduled ferry service leaving at 8:00am. You can check out the City of Toronto's regular ferry schedule here.
The only thing better than this would be if they had blockers, jammers and the boats really put out blasts of fire. You can see Dragon boats practicing in the Toronto harbour all summer long as the crews learn to work together and try to improve their speed and balance.
